On January 2, 2021, a simple conversation with a friend sparked a life-changing journey. My friend shared their New Year’s resolution to walk 10,000 steps a day. At that moment, I was still recovering from the celebrations that marked the end of 2020, feeling sluggish and unmotivated. The thought of stepping outside into the freezing winter of New York City didn't seem enticing at all, despite the numerous health benefits associated with regular walking.

Initially, I hesitated but eventually agreed to join my friend on this challenge. My enthusiasm was lukewarm; after all, walking around aimlessly for hours didn’t sound particularly appealing. However, upon checking my iPhone’s Health app, I discovered that I had averaged only 5,361 steps a day over the previous year, primarily due to lockdowns and working from home. This realization served as a small spark of motivation for me to give it a try.

As the weeks unfolded, I made several attempts to reach the 10,000-step goal. Each time, I found myself questioning how my friend maintained such dedication to the daily exercise. For someone who had spent most of their life leading a sedentary lifestyle, the idea of walking for hours after a day spent on the couch felt overwhelming and daunting.
